Canon CHDK - quick  guide.

CHDK is an alternative firmware for specific Canon Cameras models.  It includes functionality to run scripts (i.e intervalometers) or adds extra functionality such as bracketing. Not that hard to setup, but make sure you're camera is supported, or read in the discussion forum and se if a alpha version is available.

The software is placed solely on the Memory-Card, making it "safe" to install, and therefore run only in memory. The camera or software (rom) is not altered in anyway so it should  be practically impossible to brick the camera in anyway. 

Installation:

CHDK can run and be started with 2 methods.   1 is autostart whenever the camera starts, the other is thru a manual start.  Sometimes, only the autostart is the possible solution to run CDHK.

Installation consists of placing 1 or 2 files in the root-directory.   Disboot.bin and PS.FIR, but disk boot.bin is usually enough with the autostart version.

The CHDK directory is created during first run of CDHK.  Two methods/ways to run CHDK.  The Cards memory protection tab always have to be in the "locked" position, otherwise CHDK will not start.

1. Either run CHDK (start it) from the cameras menus by choosing firmware update menu. The choice is available if the Card has the .FIR file in the root directory.

2. Start CHDK with a bootable MemoryCard, and press the Alt (printer) button.  If a bootable card is present, the Camera will show CHDK during camera startup. It is then possible to automatically activate scripts, after a power outage for example. 

With the Camera startup method, 

1. Make the Card Bootable (i.e use cardtrick software on windows, format it and choose "make bootable").

2. Enable write protection with SD card, which is the "on" button for CHDK. The switch on SD-cards is only read by the SD-reader/Camera, and Write-priviliges has nothing to do with the card itself..   

Tested on Ixus SD40 (400),  and S80.

Wang Laboratories

ASUS Wlan router, model  WL-500gP (v1) from ~2008 with all leds for ethernet 1-4 on.
Reason: Faulty powersupply.

Replaced with another power supply, and it booted up just as normal. 5V/2.5A with postive tip (12.5w max) with original powersupply.

Unit also updated with OpenWrt, Backfire 10.03.

Gmail 2-step verification.

Pro's: Increased security. 

Con's: Loads of set up routines per app. Can lock yourself out of account if not careful.

Only web-based apps on iOS supports the authenticator app. Other apps need application specific passwords.

Safety net:  10 backup codes/one login per code. SMS to phone. Better not use same phone as authenticator app ;)


Authenticator app starts without password/restriction and gives you ~30 seconds to use the one time password/number displayed.  Only works in web-browsers/html5 supported apps, making application specific password an must for most apps on the phone.


Authenticator app is possible to set up on two phones simultaneously, but needs access to both phones during installation. SMS service is sometimes slow, and not recommended for daily use.

Web browsers can be set to accept cookies, and grant permission per 30 day interval, with authenticator app, and 1st login password only.

Great feature, considering the increased risk of hijackings of gmail accounts lately. Suspicious activity or log in's from different IP's around the world shows up as warnings.

Check number of running hours. 

take notice: the counter maxes out at 9999 and then starts over. 5000hours could be 15000 hours, check manufacturing year and what is reasonable. Manufacturing date is printed on door when you open it.

The following commands can be pressed to check number of total running hours.

1. Start program,  i.e dry spin cycle 3 min

2. Press "runner" and first two numbers of total running hours is displayed  

3. Press "extra rinse" and the two last numbers of total running hours is displayed.

CME UF80 / WiDI (wireless midi) version.    88-key hammergraded keys keyboard with expansionslots.


Cons:  Product quality. Good and Really Bad units are out there.  UF series seems better than U (first). 2 Keys that sound strange on mine (hits something inside) but thats seems to be a a common "problem" ;) 


Pro: Can be picket up for a low fee 2:nd hand (make sure all keys work first).  Expansion slot, and cheap cards as most sell them from overstock. 
Expanded with. 192Khz sound card.  (terratec phase 44).


UPDATE FIRMARE

Latest firmware as of Aug 2011 seems to be 2.00.   I had 1.07 before that.
Power on while holding exit + enter = Show current firmware 
Power on while holding F1 + F3 = Put UF in update mode (UPd shows on the display) 
Program used: Ubrain-beta 1.0 on XP/32.  Never got it worked/recognised in a virtuell enviroment, ie parallells on mac)


Widi (wireless midi) works natively via plug n play on both OSX 10.6.8 and XP and Win7. 
Audio (UF400 firewire):  XP = Vista driver 2.44,   Win7=vista driver 2.44 (32bit),  MAC osx=CoreAudio no drv needed.
The mixer panel under osx use rosetta, so from Lion and up, no goo.

Gmail / Calendar  - syncing to Android and iOS devices (3.x/4.x/5.x)

How To:  Show/Add "shared google calendar" on iOS/iPhone.
2 Steps.
1. Add gmail account as an exchange account (don't click gmail account)
2. Open webbrowser from phone and go to:  m.google.com/sync

1. (add gmail account as an exchange account)

- Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars

 - Add Acount (Microsoft Exchange, not Gmail!!)

Enter you name/settings

Email:  name@gmail.com 

Domain (leave empty)

Usernamn = full gmail account with included domain (asdf@gmail.com)

Password = you password

Press next.

Server = m.google.com

done!

2.
Start webbrowser (Safari), go to URL: m.google.com/sync  

log in with your username/password, 

Select device that you want to sync (if you have several iDevices, they are being shown here, iPad, iPhone etc)

Select the shared calendar you want to sync.

above webpage requires english language in webbrowser. Click change language from page, switch to english and you should be redirected back.  
The sync page shows up from several mobile devices.

TAC 2222  Regulator.

Introduced in the 90's, the TAC 2222 is a heating and water regulator.  Simple operation, 99 parameters (settings) with 5 buttons for complete operation.

Parameter 1-15 = up/down key.
Parameter 16-99 = press up/down simultaneously.
Changing value = press filled/empty bar to accept.


Limited number of external connections, and control.
4 reference thermometers. External thermometer can be replaced by GSM/3G receiver and therefore the whole unit can be remotely controlled, or by weather forecasts.

Common functions:

• Automatic regulation of heating curve (X/Y - 3 points)  
• Weekly programmable/7days,  with night setback (i.e lower temperature during nighttime)
• Weekend programs (water and heating)
• Sloping night setback and day/pre heating.  (i.e night setback is dependant of outdoor temp)
• Pumpcontrol and daily "exercise".   (i.e pumps run for 5 minutes every monday during summertime, when system might be shutdown due to hot weather = minimizes pump failure/corrosion)
• Alarm functions.
• Water control (heating)     
• 3W power effect. Memory is stored in memory for 48 hours during power outlets.

iOS 5.01 unlock/jailbreak and preservation of baseband.

1. Redsn0w (win/mac). +preserves installed software, all apps is kept on device after jailbreak.

2. Ph0nagetool. Jailbreak/modifies iOS file on computer, then uploads to device. +keeps baseband, so unlock procedures is available for locked phones. All previously downloaded apps is replaced by uploaded/modified iOS file.

If Cydia doesn't work after redsnow (jailbreak), run Redsnow again with other options (reinstall cydia). White icon common, boot tethered choice from cydia might be a remedy.

Gevey ultra

iPhone 4 (baseband 04.10.01) operator unlock under iOS 5.01

Phone locked to one operator, but changing to another. As of Jan 2012, only Gevey Chip works, no unlock software procedure is available. Microchip and template placed under real simcard, and requires slightly modified sim tray with place for chip/gevey card. Included with purchase of Gevey Card.

Phone locked to operator (tre/sweden). Trying out a Gevey Ultra (original chip, not original manufacturer) but should be very similar.

Both original chip aswell as copies exists on the market.

Copies sometimes use 5v chip (run hot, not adviced), Original Gevey (and gevey ultra) runs on 3Volt. Original chip no starts with F9xx (se picture)

Unlock procedure.

1. Settings - Phone - Sim Applications - - Click Gevey...

2. Click Accept (big green button), wait 15 seconds according to instructions

3. Call 112, hang up within 2 seconds (so call wont go thru)

4. Enter settings - enable airplane mode (wait for sim error message).

5. After sim error message, disable airplane mode = Operator unlock in progress.

Unlock procedure ~1.5 minute.

As of Jan 15 2012, nu automatic unlock works with my card. Furiousmod 1, 1,1 and 2.0 doesn't work, and when FuriousMod is installed, the manual unlock procedure doesn't work anymore (menues doesn't show). Uninstall FuriousMod, and manual unlock works again.

Original Gevey Chip, but not original sim card bought from applenberries or other seller. Should be close to original, maybe something else that is wrong. Never tested under 4.3x
